The exhibition “DIGITAL: AAA Prints 2012–2019” runs from October 21 – December 5, 2021 at The Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT. There is an opening reception on Thursday, October 21st, 6 pm - 8 pm.

From their press materials: “Western Connecticut State University's Department of Art is pleased to present the exhibition, Digital: AAA Prints 2012-2019 at The Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center from Oct. 21 through Dec. 5, 2021. The exhibition represents 73 visual artists. Admission is free and open to the public; reservations to attend the reception should be made online at wcsuvpac.eventbrite.com. The Art Gallery is located in the Visual and Performing Arts Center at 43 Lake Ave. Extension, Danbury. Face coverings and social distancing protocol required. The Art Gallery is sponsored by the WCSU Department of Art. Contributions to support the art gallery are appreciated.

Since its first exhibition in 1937, American Abstract Artists has used printmaking as a platform to both introduce and document the work of its members and to expand the vocabulary of abstraction to an ever-increasing audience. This print portfolio tradition began with the celebration of the organization’s first anniversary and was followed decades later by marking AAA’s fiftieth, sixtieth, and seventy-fifth anniversaries. With the advent of digital technology, AAA decided to break with tradition and print new portfolios digitally, a meaningful shift as the three previous portfolio editions were printed by lithography, a classic printmaking process. Designing and printing digital prints mirrors changes in the visual world, one result of perpetual technological achievements. In 2019, partly as an addendum to the 2012 portfolio exhibition, for exhibition purposes, and as an opportunity to showcase the work of recent AAA members (as well as earlier members who did not participate in the 2012 portfolio), American Abstract Artists published the 2019 Monoprint Portfolio. This exhibition is a loan from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Collection of the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture.

As a part of the Exhibition the Department of Art is also hosting “Conversations on Abstraction” on Sat, October 23, 3:00–4:00 pm. A Virtual Panel Discussion with American Abstract Artists members, Jeffrey Bishop, Jacob Cartwright, Melissa Staiger and Vera Vasek. Registration should be made online at wcsuvpac.eventbrite.com to get the Zoom link to join the discussion.

Regular gallery hours are Tues.-Fri. 12 noon-4 pm and Sat.-Sun. 1 pm-4 pm. Please check with the venue for possible holiday closings.

Gallery at Still River Editions Spotlight: "Minke Whale" by Ann Nicholson Brown

“Minke Whale” © Ann Nicholson Brown

One of the most striking photographic collages in Ann Nicholson Brown’s exhibition “Postcards to an Island” is called “Minke Whale”, featuring an unusual and haunting skull. In the collage, the skull is framed by a nimbus of queen anne’s lace, and a border of rope.

The skeleton in the photograph is of a minke whale, a type of baleen whale, that washed up on North Haven Island in 2016. The stranded whale’s skeleton provided an opportunity for naturalists, students, and artists alike to study. Here’s an article about it from Island Institute.

Nicholson Brown photographed the skeleton while on the island.

”Postcards to an Island” is on view at The Gallery at Still River Editions through December 18, 2020, 8:30 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Images from the exhibition are also available on Still River Editions’ website. Visitors may come in person. Masks are mandatory, and only 1-2 people from one household are allowed in the gallery at one time.

“Postcards to an Island” is an exhibition of photographic collages by Ann Nicholson Brown taking place at The Gallery at Still River Editions in Danbury, CT from October 5 through December 18, 2020. Nicholson Brown’s photo collages were photographed at North Haven Island, Maine, where her family spends summers. The images combine photographs captured by Nicholson Brown in traditional and alternative photographic printmaking processes. The resulting collages juxtapose natural elements in fresh and sometimes mysterious combinations that awaken the senses. Ann Nicholson Brown is a resident of New Canaan, CT.

Nicholson Brown says of her work, “I begin by photographing the island’s woods, fields, and seacoast, a natural kingdom with all its plant life, rocks, shells, and bones bleached by the sun. I then dismantle and re-assemble the photographs by hand into a meditation on these gathered memories—patched and uncertain as my recollections of one summer blending into the next.” Full artist statement and bio here.

The gallery is open 8:30 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday except Monday, October 12 (Indigenous Peoples Day), November 26-27 (Thanksgiving holiday). Exhibition images will also be online at stillrivereditions.com.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, masks that cover the mouth and nose are required for entry. Only 1-2 people from the same household are allowed in the gallery at one time. No restrooms are available at this time, so please plan accordingly.

cruse_scanner_photo.jpg

Cruse scanners are the world’s leader in contact-free large format scanners. They are a vital resource for many museums, libraries, universities, and historical societies; a key digitizing tool for preserving artworks and large documents for future generations.

With our Cruse scanner, we can scan artwork up to 36”x48” in a single scan, or up to 70”x72” scanned in sections and digitally stitched. It will accept works up to 6 ½” deep. The artwork lays on a moving table face up with nothing touching the top surface. It uses a unique lighting system that virtually eliminates reflections, especially on high gloss works. It also has the option to change the lighting to emphasize or reduce surface textures.

"Configuring the Figure: “Paintings & Drawings by Karen Bonanno” at Five Points Annex Gallery

© Karen Bonanno

© Karen Bonanno

Karen Bonanno is featured in a solo exhibition titled “Configuring the Figure: Paintings & Drawings by Karen Bonanno” at Five Points Annex Gallery, 17 Water St., Torrington, CT. The exhibition runs from March 12 - March 22, 2020 with an artist reception on Friday, March 13, from 6 pm - 8 pm, and a closing party on Sunday, March 22, from 2 pm - 4 pm. Regular gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday 1 pm - 5 pm.

From the gallery’s website: “Configuring the Figure is a study of how multiple forms relate to one another, the space around them and to the format of the work itself. These imagined figures are formed with intent using expressive brushwork and bold colors, often appearing in ambiguous atmospheric spaces, creating an emboldened narrative that is both solid and present.

I am most interested in the figure, whether it be in an interior, exterior or an undefined atmospheric space. Through expressive mark making and color choice, the figure is formed and solidified in its environment. Not so much capturing a likeness of a particular person but rather a gesture and mood that contributes to the narrative of the painting. My main influences are the artists of the Bay Area Figurative movement including David Park, Richard Deibenkorn and Elmer Bischoff as well as Cezanne, Bonnard and Matisse.”

From Temple Emanu-El’s website: “Imagine being with Streisand as she shopped in a thrift store, rifled through outfits in her apartment, met David Merrick when he offered her the starring role in Broadway’s Funny Girl, or swooned over the latest styles in Paris with Marlene Dietrich and Coco Chanel.

Award-winning Life magazine photographer Bill Eppridge was—and he captured those moments in a series of stunning candid photographs that document her life and career. Adrienne Aurichio, Eppridge’s wife, edited those images into the magnificent book Becoming Barbra, and she will share those images and the stories behind them in a photographic tour of Barbra Streisand’s life.”

“FreeForm: Exploring the Creative Process” is an exhibition of work by Leslie Giuliani and Roxy Savage taking place at the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Western Connecticut State University from Thursday, January 30th through March 8th 2020. The VPAC is located at 43 Lake Ave Ext, Danbury, CT 06811, and the gallery is on the 2nd floor.

There is an opening reception from 6 pm to 8 pm on January 30th. It is free, but requested that attendees register via Eventbrite.

From WCSU’s website: ‘This exhibition will demonstrate how the artists inspire each other, and how their personal interests and technological means determine and influence the artwork they make,’ Giuliani observed in her artist statement. “The works in this show will feature individually created projects as well as collaborative pieces, focusing on each artist’s unique vision and love of play. Play and experimentation are essential elements to each artist’s practice'.

Giuliani and Savage met in a print shop more than a decade ago and developed a friendship based in part on their encouragement of each other to explore artistic media and techniques previously unfamiliar to them. Savage, a master printmaker, inspired Giuliani to begin making prints as part of her creative work. Giuliani taught Savage in the use of encaustic wax techniques and the incorporation of sewing into her creative process.”
