ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a collector of images, mining them for unexpected combinations. In my artistic practice I chose to use photography explore the relationships between images I observe and record, rather than for its documentary aspect.

Whether looking through the viewfinder of the camera, creating collages digitally or manipulating materials, I am drawn to the aspects that contain and formalize a space. In a society where we are constantly bombarded by loud, disparate and raw imagery, I aim to create a calm and enchanting world, both within and outside the frame.

about the artist

Karen Neems is a photo collage and mixed media artist based in Stamford, CT. She earned her BA at the University of Rochester with studies in Art History, Psychology and Studio Art. She continued her academic work in photography at the George Eastman House, with an NEH grant to catalog and research their 19th century collection.

Karen has had solo shows at Silvermine Arts Center, New Canaan, CT, Westport Arts Center, Westport, CT, The Loft Artist’s and Mayor’s Gallery in Stamford, CT, and the Mamaroneck Artists Guild in Larchmont, NY. Her work has also been included in many selective exhibitions, juried by curators from major museums; among them, the Faber Birren National Color Award Show, the Images show at the Fairfield Museum, CameraWorks at the Ridgefield Guild of Artists, Art of the Northeast and other exhibitions at the Silvermine Artists Guild, the Flinn Gallery and University of Connecticut. She has won numerous awards for her work in photography and mixed media, and is a member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists.
