"Then, What If?" and "Expanded Vocabularies" at Five Points Gallery, Torrington

Five Points Gallery in Torrington is hosting two concurrent exhibitions “Then, What If?” in the TDP Gallery and “Expanded Vocabularies” in East & West Galleries from October 31 through November 30, 2019. There will be an opening reception on November 1, 2019, and an artists’ panel discussion on November 15 at 6:30 pm. There will also be a special video screening event and Q&A for “Then, What If?” on Saturday, November 9th at 6:30 pm led by curators Gene Gort and Ken Steen.

“Then, What If?” is presented by NewMusicNewMediaNewEngland, a program curated by Gene Gort and Ken Steen. From Five Points’ website:
"‘THEN, WHAT IF?’, like ‘What If?’, has three iterations; a video screening event, an installation for gallery presentation and a website. For the screening event, to engage in the random activity, audience members select one number each from a video- and audio-designated list as they enter the venue. These numbers determine the evening's program of 60 works resulting in a 60-minute screening. For the gallery installation, a computer with media projection and stereo sound is loaded with all the files and the user selects random pairings or specific pairings for playback. The website, designed and programmed by Tim Lawless, similarly has a random generator scripted into the site and visitors can randomize the pairings or determine the pairings specifically as well. The project has been curated from an international call for entries and includes seasoned veterans with young producers.” The entire list of video and sound artists may be viewed on Five Points’ website (linked above).

The project may also be interacted with on nmnmne.org.

The work featured in this exhibition is a fresh selection of work that has been produced over the past two years on the second floor of the Water Street gallery. Artists have been diligent in developing their vocabulary while being part of a nurturing and supportive artist community with shared space conducive for growth and experimentation. The work ranges in content from fashion to photography and explores themes such as memory, personal history, self portraiture, sustainability, the body and the rawness of materiality to name a few.” Full list of artists on Five Points’ website (linked above.)

19sm.jpg

The exhibition “Covering Blue Note” is on view from October 10 - 16, 2019 in the Gallery at the Visual & Performing Arts Center at Western Connecticut State University. Reception and performance Thursday, October 10 from 6 pm - 8 pm (free, ticketed).

”Covering Blue Note” is a collaborative multi-disciplinary project, performance, and exhibition simultaneously combining live music, a multi-photographer photo session, and multiple graphic design stations. Leveraging the speed and flexibility of digital technology, a process that took weeks in the past will happen in real-time during the gallery opening. Drawing on the iconic Blue Note jazz label’s sound and look, a jazz quartet will present an “open rehearsal” in the gallery while multiple photographers shoot the session ala famed Blue Note co-owner and photographer Francis Wolf. An in-house photo editor will download the photographs, select the most interesting ones and send them to three graphic design work stations. Using the iconic work of designer Reid Miles as a model, individual graphic designers will create 12x12 album sized artwork for both electronic display, printing, and exhibition. Sponsored by the WCSU Alumni Association

Our amazing eyes (and brain) - seeing colors

2700K-600K

The eyes (and brain) make complicated calculations millions of times per second. One of these is the perception of colors. Unless you have protanopia (color blindness) we all see colors slightly different. This can change throughout the duration of a day many times. Fatigue, bright light, low light, looking at a certain color object for a length of time, computer/smartphone use, and so on are factors.

But when we look at something under different light, like daylight (5000K) vs tungsten (2700K), our brain “auto corrects” to a somewhat neutral compromise. This can be good or bad.

When looking at color prints under different color temperature lighting, certain colors in a print may look slightly different. Our eyes can only do so much to compensate, sort of a general compensation.

To the left is a photo showing the same object (M&Ms on a plate) under different color temperature lighting. Your eyes, if you were looking at each separately, would do it’s calculation to make things look “normal”. But it’s also possible the red M&Ms will look quite different.

Food for thought.

"A Life in Balance: Caroline Harman" at Washington Art Association

Caroline Harman’s solo exhibition “A Life in Balance” opens at Washington Art Association on Saturday, July 13, 2019. The exhibition runs through August 24. The exhibition features recent paintings and works on paper/mylar. In addition, Harman is making available prints of her work made by Master Printmaker Mark Savoia of Still River Editions.

From her artist statement on the WAA website: “Nature speaks in patterns, and I have worked to perfect a language of color and geometry that can respond to the boundless stimuli and increasing instability all around us. Through art, I try to explore how living organisms, and the complex systems within which they exist, adapt to random events and adverse conditions. An optimist by nature, my earlier work was devoted to the ideal of resiliency and the hope of survival. Lately, however, the paintings and drawings are leading me in a new direction – one that is less ordered and stable, tilting toward a tipping point that feels more imminent with each passing day.”

Washington Art Association is located at 4 Bryan Memorial Plaza, Washington Depot Connecticut. Open Tues. - Sat, 10 am - 5 pm, Sunday 10 am - 2 pm.

This collection tells the story of a divisive war that left a deep and lasting impression on American life.

From Malcolm Browne’s photograph of the burning monk and Nick Ut’s picture of a 9-year-old running from a napalm attack to Eddie Adams’ photograph of the execution of a Viet Cong prisoner, Vietnam: The Real War contains images that both recorded and changed history.
