Jim Malloy in SCAN "Color in Winter" exhibition and more

Multi-disciplinary artist, writer, and songwriter Jim Malloy has three paintings being shown in the Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) member exhibition “Color in Winter” which runs until March 29, 2019. The exhibition takes place at the Newtown Municipal Building, 3 Primrose St., Newtown, Connecticut. There is an artist’s reception on Wednesday, February 27th from 3 pm - 4:30 pm.

Malloy recently had two paintings accepted into the Ridgefield Guild of Artists “Conversations” member show which runs until February 17, 2019.

In addition, Malloy has three limited edition prints made by Still River Editions being shown at the Barn Gallery in New Fairfield.

WWI Poster Exhibition at The Gallery at Still River Editions: "And They Thought We Couldn't Fight"

“And They Thought We Couldn’t Fight” is an exhibition of World War I Liberty Loan Posters from the private collection of Kenneth T. Dixon on view at The Gallery at Still River Editions from January 7 through March 29, 2019. There will be a free, public reception for the exhibition on Saturday, February 2 from 2 pm – 4 pm (with a snow date on February 9.)

During World War I, one third of the country’s population bought at least one Liberty Bond. The bonds were sold through massive publicity campaigns that appealed to the public’s sense of patriotism through the powerful visual medium of the poster. The lithographic posters show a wide array of illustration styles and bold lettering with slogans meant to stir the public into action to fund the war.

It was the dawning of mass-marketing and sophisticated propaganda. Twenty four billion dollars, two thirds of the war’s cost, was raised by 66 million transactions, in five bond drives that all exceeded projections.

Kenneth T. Dixon, who is a nationally recognized columnist for the Hearst Connecticut Media Group, began his collection as a child when he was given a gift of the poster from which the exhibit takes his name. He continued collecting posters as an adult after finding a trove in a bookstore near the State Capitol, where he was working as a reporter.

“I didn’t plan on collecting these, but I couldn’t let them go when I saw them,” says Dixon. “And the next thing you know, I had eighteen of them. Back in 1997, the centennial of The Great War was still 20 years away.”

Last year marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, and 2019 is the 100th anniversary of the last of the war bond drives, the Victory Liberty Loan.

There are fifteen posters from Dixon’s collection on view.

Friedman Gallery Winter 2018 Pop-up

Friedman Gallery has a pop-up location featuring the photographs of Michael Friedman “The Lost Rock & Roll Negatives” and Larry Silver “Connecticut Photographs”. Michael Friedman’s photographs chronicle a time in his life when he was working in the music industry. The negatives had been lost for almost 50 years. This is a preview of an exhibition that will be at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in the Fall of 2019. They feature artists like Janis Joplin, The Band, Todd Rundgren, Paul Butterfield, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, and The Rolling Stones. Friedman’s archival black and white prints are made by master printmaker Mark Savoia of Still River Editions.

Westport photographer Larry Silver’s work is in the collections of museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and the Whitney Museum. Most of the photographs presented in this exhibition were taken in the 1970’s and 1980’s in Westport, Fairfield, Southport and Black Rock.

Catherine Vanaria, of Still River Editions, is featured in the group exhibition “Toy Boat” curated by Sarah Fritchey from the Artspace New Haven flat file. The exhibition runs from November 30, 2018 through March 2, 2019 with an opening reception on Friday, November 30 from 5 pm - 8 pm.

Catherine Vanaria is a photographer, master black and white printmaker, co-owner of Still River Editions. She is also Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Art Department at Western Connecticut State University.

ASAP! Presents A Celebration of Young Photographers

Art for ALZ at The Carriage Barn

The Carriage Barn Art Center is hosting an art exhibition “Art for ALZ” to benefit the CT chapter of Alzheimer’s Association from October 26 through November 3, 2018. Over 40 artists are exhibiting including clients Lisa Berger, Paul Berger, and June Eichbaum.

Jim Felice at City Wide Open Studios, Alternative Space Weekend

Jim Felice has created an installation for City Wide Open Studios Alternative Space Weekend, which takes place October 26-28 from noon - 6 pm each day on the Yale West Campus, 410 Campus Drive, Orange, CT.

Felice says, “The installation I am presenting at CWOS is a concept that presents social commentary on the horrendous events that have been going on at our border separating children from their parents.”

A companion piece is on exhibit at Artspace New Haven for the duration of October.

Exhibitions by Edith Borax-Morrison and Hank Paper at Kehler Liddell Gallery

Edith Borax-Morrison, who is a client of Still River Editions, will be featured in a solo exhibition, “Celebration” at Kehler Liddell Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut, from October 18 through November 18, 2018. Also featured in a simultaneous solo exhibition is Hank Paper. There is an opening reception for both exhibitions on Sunday, November 4, from 2 pm - 6 pm with artist talks at 2 pm.

Morrison’s exhibition “presents a series of small pen and ink drawings drawn over the last 12 months that were inspired by a grid of 30 rectangles holding her 30-day supply of medications. The drawings reflect the personal life change and reduced stress that occurred when she recently moved into an assisted living facility in Orange, CT. The intricate interwoven lines, circles and marks in her abstract drawings speak to the very nature of the artist: consistent, compulsive, with meticulous attention to detail.” 

Hank Paper’s exhibition is titled “Surprise Encounters.” Of his work, Paper says: ‘Shooting around the world, I try to capture images that alter our awareness, puncture pretension and mine irony from surface appearances. My images lodge in the hidden, interstices of perception – what people look at, yet don’t see.”

Kehler Liddell Gallery is located at 873 Whalley Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut.

Lisa Cohen of Silver Mountain Studio at Armonk Art Show

Equine photographer Lisa Cohen is exhibiting at Armonk Art Show Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30th from 9 to 5 pm. 185 artists were from 28 states were juried into the exhibition. The show is located at 205 Business Park Drive, Armonk, New York.

Still River Editions printed Cohen’s work for the exhibition. The Gallery at Still River Editions hosted her exhibit “Saddle Horse” in 2014.

"The Lost Negatives" of Michael Friedman, opening in Malibu

An exhibition of Michael Friedman’s rock and roll photographs “The Lost Negatives” will be on exhibit at Canvas, Malibu, 23410 Civic Center Way, Malibu, California from September 26 through October 31, 2018.

Friedman’s negatives were lost for nearly 50 years. From his website: “Friedman was an avid photographer when he worked in the music business in the 60’s and 70’s as a manager and producer.   He had the opportunity to befriend, work with, and photograph, legendary musical artists including Janis Joplin, The Band, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, James Cotton, Todd Rundgren & the Rolling Stones.”

Earlier in 2018, the exhibition was on view at The California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica, California. In 2019, it will be brought to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Still River Editions made the archival digital black and white prints for the exhibition.

"Shelf Life" at The Institute Library

Catherine Vanaria, Associate Professor of Art at Western Connecticut State University and co-owner of Still River Editions, is one of the artists featured in the exhibition “Shelf Life” at The Institute Library, 847 Chapel St., New Haven, CT from September 29 through December 29, 2018. There is an opening reception on Saturday, September 29 from 4 pm - 6 pm with an artist talk at 5 pm.

From their online materials: “Our fall show: Shelf Life, featur[es] books from the Institute Library biography collection and art about historic individuals, in all forms - portraits, self- portraits, and more. Artists briefly speak about their work half way through at 5pm. Artists include Adger Cowans, Mary Dwyer, Patricia Fabricant, John T. Forty Years of Prints

It was 1978, Boston, standing in a darkroom in Kendall Square, watching a print processing tube go around and around, waiting for the next step to dump and refill. That was forty years ago, and I am still making photographs/prints. Who ever thought that would be my destiny?

I went to school to be a professional photographer and ended up on the other end of the gun, getting paid to print. Brown finger tips, who-knows-what inhaled, lack of sunshine. But the bright part is it let me meet my best friend and wife, sharing pressurized air over a light box. And how many images have I seen printing, processing, mounting slides (my estimate, well over two million frames), trimming, and packing? It's like I lived every other photographer's life. But I enjoy it, and that is what life is supposed to be, to do what you like.

I never knew that in 1964, glued to my father’s side in his hobby basement darkroom, truly amazed at the magic of an image popping up in a tray of smelly chemicals, that I would continue doing it. Thanks dad for forty years of printing…so far.

Shelby Lee Adams' color photographs in The Book of Life

The Book of Life (Steidl, 2018) presents Shelby Lee Adams' color photographs of four generations of the Appalachian people. Adams began photographing the inhabitations of the rural Appalachian mountain range in 1974, using black-and-white film and Polaroid materials. In time he also worked with color Kodachrome film, invariably returning to the Eastern Kentucky region where he was born. By 2010 Adams was photographing exclusively in digital color, and this book marks the first time he is sharing his color work.

Adams has consistently focused on the valleys and homes of Kentucky families, relatives and neighbors in a predominantly seven-county region. He has often revisited individuals and families many times over decades, distributing his photos and books while creating new pictures. This personal approach has led to the creation of genuine and deep relationships between photographer and subject, in which the subject is often involved in unusually creative ways, verbalizing the emotions they would like to express during the shoot, and where and how they would like to be depicted.

Born in Kentucky in 1950, Shelby Lee Adams attended the Cleveland Institute of Art where he encountered the photographs of the Farm Security Administration; these inspired him to take photos of the people of Appalachia, an ongoing project that has shaped his life’s work. Adams’ awards include a survey grant and fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (1978, 1992), grants from the Polaroid Corporation (1989–92) and the John Simon Guggenheim Photography Fellowship (2010). His work is held in collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland. Adams exhibits and teaches internationally, and is currently developing his archive with the Center of Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona.

Madison’s Mercy by the Sea Retreat & Conference Center will be hosting Bethel artist Elisabeth J Levy’s photography exhibit WaterScapes from July 11-August 15, 2018.

The opening reception will be on July 15 from 2-4pm at the Mary C. Daly, RSM Gallery on the premises at 167 Neck Road, Madison, CT. The reception is free and open to the public.

From the press release: "WaterScapes is the latest effort of Fairfield County based Photographic Artist Elisabeth J Levy who is known for her luminous yet intimate images of the natural world, as well as her original Zen & The Art of Seeing Photography & Mindfulness Workshop series. The WaterScapes exhibit is divided into three distinct parts that each honor water in a unique way. The Sound Beauty collection was shot entirely along the Connecticut Shoreline, spanning three seasons including a fortuitous January thaw and according to the artist is a tribute to the magic of the Long Island Sound. The Ripples series – a more abstract approach and a distinct departure in style from the more conventional landscapes Levy is known for – captures the shapes, colors, patterns, and textures of a 'beloved freshwater swimming quarry' in her Bethel, CT hometown.

The third portion of WaterScapes titled Water Dance is Levy’s first foray into Video Montage. She explains, “since it is the movement of water that creates most of its rapture I felt that to most accurately reflect its enthralling spell I had to use moving images.” Water Dancecontains footage captured in a diverse collection of locations and according to Levy was created 'to inspire and soothe the soul.'"

"USA '68: Disorders and Dreams" presented by Foundation MAST, collaboration with Monroe Gallery

Monroe Gallery of Photography's photojournalism exhibition "1968: It Was 50 Years Ago Today" has been renamed "USA '68: Disorders and Dreams" and is now on view in Bologna, Italy at Foundation MAST through September 30, 2018.

Among the photographs on view are several by Life Magazine photographer Bill Eppridge, that were printed by Master Printmaker Mark Savoia of Still River Editions.

Dayna Wenzel in three summer exhibitions

Danbury artist Dayna Wenzel's sculpture is featured in three exhibitions in June/July 2018. Wenzel often combines natural materials - nests, hives, wood, and animal remains - with human-made objects, rendering metaphors for the viewer to contemplate. Wenzel has a special affinity for the insects who are often contributors to her work. She often disassembles and re-assembles hives, highlighting  and emphasizing their texture and geometry.

Wenzel has previously exhibited at The Gallery at Still River Editions.

1. Katonah Museum of Art, 134 Jay St., Katonah NY. "Signal" exhibition. Opening Reception: Sat June 30, 5:00 - 7:00 pm. This diverse show features artists from the tri-state area, juried by Lumi Tan, curator at The Kitchens in NYC. The opening party features live local music, food, and juror's awards. The show continues to July 29. Wenzel's mixed media work "Inner Sanctum" constructed of recycled wasp nest paper is included in this group show. 2. Tivoli Artists Gallery, 60 County Rd 78, Tivoli, NY. "Let's Mix It Up".  This collaboration and mixed media show runs June 29 - July 22, 2018. The free opening reception is Sat June 30, 6:00 - 8:00pm. A free artist talk and closing party is Sunday July 22, 3:00 - 5:00pm. Wenzel was invited to participate in this small group show by New York artist and exhibit co-curator Pamela Tucker. Dayna's "Cosmos Series" of four ceiling-hung mixed media works will be featured. 

3. The Eric Sloane Museum, 31 Kent Cornwall Rd., Kent, CT. "Noah Blake and his Wonderful Cabin". June 29 - July 13. This show is inspired by Eric Sloane's book Diary of an Early American Boy: Noah Blake, 1805. Eric Sloane (1905 - 1985) was a prolific painter and writer who captured the spirit of early American life. His many books contain illustrations of early American tools, many of which are on display in the richly curated collection in the museum. Wenzel has recreated two works based on Sloane's illustrations of a "bottle window" and a "rick vane". Both utilize recycled antique barn wood and primitive wood working techniques. The artists's reception is July 4, 11:00am - 1:00pm. A bell ringing and reading of the Declaration of Independence will commence at 2:00pm. Many other events are scheduled, such as hewing and shingle making, and tool box building.
