The work of Tara Tomaselli Photography is featured in the exhibition "Coastal Collection" at Hancock Hall, 31 Staples St., Danbury, CT

From her artist's statement: “Coastal towns have inspired me as an artist and photographer to capture and preserve beautiful moments and imagery. From seashells to seascapes, buoys to boats, and a variety of weathered architecture, I am drawn to their vibrant colors and captivating greys. Most often what I present is a close up view of an object or section of something larger. I want the composition to be simple, but interesting. I want to show the beauty in things no matter their current state.

The opening reception has been moved to Friday, February 13 from 4 pm - 6 pm in light of the forecast.

The exhibit is part of the Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut's Accessible Art Project.

Line Describing a Cone: Tri-State Juried Exhibition at Katonah Museum of Art, January 18 through February 15, 2015.

The list of accepted artists from around New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut may be found here and includes among them Mark Savoia of Still River Editions, as well as local sculptor Eric Camiel (Camiel's sculpture, "Crescent Use", is at left), and mixed-media artist Stacey Kolbig, of New Fairfield.

From their website: "The definition of space is one of the fundamental features of visual representation in twentieth and twenty-first century art. From the oscillating layers of a Cézanne painting to the deep corridors of depth in a de Chirico work, artists have addressed the elements of three dimensions in various and often competing ways. Using film as light cutting through space, contemporary artist Anthony McCall’s work, Line Describing a Cone (1973) inspires this year’s theme; the piece is spatial and temporary, with light the primary medium giving form to an environment. Artists are invited to explore the meaning of space in their work, using whatever materials and expressive outlets they require. Representing space is but one potential feature; experiencing with works that proclaim their physical relationship to their environment another."

The exhibit was juried by Eva Respini, Curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Katonah Museum of Art is located at 134 Jay St., Katonah, New York.

Carriage Barn seeking entries for SPECTRUM: 26th Annual Show (no photography)

The Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan, CT seeks submissions in all media except photography focusing on the exhibition theme "Elemental Energies" for SPECTRUM, it's 26th Annual Show. Prospectus found here. Entry deadline January 29, 2015. The exhibit will run Saturday, February 28 through Sunday, March 29, 2015.

From their email to artists: "Artwork in all media, except photography, will be considered. Artists should make note of exact materials and any distinctive presentation of the artwork if applicable.

This year's exhibition theme, Elemental Energies, focuses on the four elements, namely earth, air, fire, and water. These four elements of astrological tradition refer to the vital forces or energies that make up the universe. A tradition of representing the elements in art stems back to the Renaissance and was especially popular in the Netherlands. This system of ordering the world can be interpreted broadly. For example, Earth can be represented by landscapes, animals, plants, or works made of natural materials. Fire, the element that is used to create sculpture or glass, can categorize most three-dimensional works or be represented literally.

Amy Smith-Stewart is the Curator at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield."

These things, once abandoned, immediately begin to vanish as nature begins the slow work of taking them back.… I am less interested in what people took away from these places than in what they left behind, and what happened to it.”

The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The Gallery at Still River Editions is located at 128 East Liberty St., Danbury, CT. Normal business hours 8:30 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday, and during posted hours for special events.

From ODETTA's website: "The four artists in 'Becoming…' invigorate the genre of portraiture with wit, beauty, and style. "Saddle Horse: Photographs by Lisa Cohen" opens at the gallery at Still River Editions

"Stolen Moment"
© Lisa Cohen
"Saddle Horse: Photographs by Lisa Cohen" opens October 25 at the Gallery at Still River Editions with an opening reception from 2 pm - 4 pm. The opening and exhibit are free and open to the public.

The exhibit reflects Lisa Cohen's experiences photographing the Great American Horse Drive in Colorado, an annual event during which 800 working horses are driven 60 miles over two days. These horses live free much like the wild mustangs do over the winter months, and then spend more clement seasons working on ranches. It is a unique opportunity, given both the animals and the landscape.

Cohen noticed some of the same animals over the four times she returned to the event, and photographed them as they sought each other out, as in "Stolen Moment" at left.

Not all of the images are as restful--she also captures the thundering movement of the herd, which creates a sense of exhilaration.

The Gallery at Still River Editions is located at 128 East Liberty St., Danbury, Connecticut. Regular gallery hours are 8:30 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday. The exhibit was printed by Master Printmaker Mark Savoia.

"Missing Links" at the Institute Library, curated by Catherine Vanaria

"Robespierre Unleashed"

Twelve area artists are featured in this unusual group exhibition at the Institute Library in New Haven that explores the meaning of an anonymous antique photo album. It is curated by photographer Catherine Vanaria of New Fairfield. Vanaria is Assistant Professor of Art, and Chair of the Art Department at Western Connecticut State University as well as co-owner of Still River Editions and Connecticut Photographics.

The exhibit runs from October 18 through November 29, 2014 and there is an opening reception on Saturday, October 18 from 12 pm - 2 pm. The Institute Library is located at 847 Chapel St., New Haven, CT.

A page from the "found" photo album
According to Vanaria’s curatorial statement, ”The artists and writers participating in Missing Links were asked to create their own stories and interpretations based on an anonymous early-20th century photo album found at a flea market. The unidentified materials, separated from their original context, have become a springboard for new narratives.”

The individual works created by the artists and writers use diverse media to get their ideas across, and the end result blurs the lines between photography, sculpture, painting, collage, installation, writing, and sound.

The artists are: Chris Durante (Redding), Jim Felice (Danbury), Gene Gort (West Hartford), Brigid Guertin (Danbury), Lys Guillorn (Shelton), Diane Zaleta Hassan (Danbury), Stacey Kolbig (New Fairfield), Victor Pasquale (Mount Kisco, NY), Lori Robeau (Torrington), Elyse Shapiro (Norwalk), Catherine Vanaria (New Fairfield), and Andrea Zimmermann (Newtown).
