Control
© Inger Schoelkopf
Photographer Inger Schoelkopf's giclée of her black-and-white film photograph titled "Control" was selected to be in the juried Spectra National Photography Triennial at Silvermine Guild Gallery 1037 Silvermine Road New Canaan, CT. There will be an opening Sun 14th 2-4 pm, and the exhibit will remain up until December 23.
Marriage

Also of note: Schoelkopf's color photograph, titled "Marriage", received Honorable Mention in the 35th Annual Professional Women Photographers exhibition. It will be up on their online gallery for 6 months. Schoelkopf says she felt honored to be included because one of the judges was Elinor Carucci, one of her favorite contemporary photographers.

Schoelopf brings out a kind of tenderness in her often edgy subjects--she sees beauty in uncommon places. There is a gallery of Schoelkopf's images here on the website of Vision Access Photo Collective, of which she is a member.

Bridgeport Art Trail the Focus this Week, November 10-14

This week, from Nov 10-14th, Bridgeport, CT's arts community and City Lights Gallery is hosting Bridgeport's 2010 Art Trail. There are many events taking place at 17 venues throughout the city, which are outlined in this PDF pamphlet. It's very exciting that Bridgeport (so close to where I grew up, and where I live now) is doing so much for the arts.

These are just two events out of many...

 Black Rock Gallery

This Friday, November 12, Comix opens at The Gallery at Black Rock's future home at 305 Knowlton St., Bridgeport from 6-9pm. The show explores art influenced by comics and cartooning. Some artists included in the show are Ronnie Rysz, Diane DiMassa, Mark DeRosa, David Mel, Charlie Walsh, Liz Squillace, Ricky Mestre, kHyal™, EFitz, Allen Wittert, Vito Bonnano and more.

The American Fabric Arts Building open studios takes place Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14th, 10am to 5 pm both days at The Bridgeport Commerce Park 1069 Connecticut Avenue, Bldg. 4, Bridgeport, CT.

The event will showcase 27+ artists in a wide range of media.

Several things are drawing me in: Denyse Schmidt Quilts' sample sale, a free art raffle, Emily Larned's letterpress work, Ulla Surland's design work in interiors and clothing (I haven't seen her in a very long time!), and photographer Thomas Mezzanotte, whose work in alternative processes is dreamy. They're just a tiny sample of what's going on. I have a feeling this is a building in which I used to work at Hysteria, a humor publishing company many, moons ago (I'll know when I get there).

The American Fabrics Building's Facebook is here.

Zachary Keeting: Three Shows in November

"Maxizmo"
©Zachary Keeting

We met Zachary Keeting at New Haven's City Wide Open Studios, where we shared a studio space with him at Erector Square. His abstract paintings' confident brushstrokes and bold color were a great contrast to our black-and-white photography. (We also benefited from his prior experience with open studios, and enjoyed the company--so thanks, Zach!)

He has three shows opening in November, and we share them with you here:

Mind Sets opens Thursday November 4th 5 - 7 PM at Haskins Laboratories, 300 George St, New Haven, CT Four pieces from 2001
The show will remain up until Jan 28th.

True Singing is a Different Breathing opens Saturday November 6th 6 - 10 PM at Vaudeville Park, 26 Bushwick Ave, Brooklyn, NY. The show will remain up until Nov 28th.

Dating Gorky's Granddaughter opens Thursday November 18th 5:30 - 8 PM at FPAC Gallery, 300 Summer Street M1, Boston, MA. A two person show with Christopher Joy - the show will remain up until Dec 30th.

Rebecca Mushtare: "Self-Disclosed" at IDEAS10, Vancouver, B.C.

© Rebecca Mushtare
Rebecca Mushtare's digital print, titled "Self-Disclosed", will be a part of IDEAS10: Art and Digital Narrative in conjunction with the International Digital Media Arts Association conference in Vancouver, B. C. (at Emily Carr University of Art and Design) from November 4 -6, 2010.

The conference's website describes its focus--"New digital technologies and mediums are informing, challenging and reinventing our notions of narrative structures and storytelling. Non- linear, virtual, artificial, interactive, and cyber culture have become common terms and concepts when describing the emerging integration of science, art, and sociology." In her print, she uses a colorful chart to simultaneously describe relationships between aspects of one's life in a way that may not be possible with representational artwork.

Mushtare, who works in digital media, installation, and fiber art, is an Assistant Professor at Marymount Manhattan College. Her website features an overview of her work, and a links section that contains many interesting resources for the digital artist.

Robert Hanna, cinematographer of "Circus", six-hour PBS series airing Nov. 3

© Robert Hanna
We know Robert Hanna because of printing his black and white still photographs of circus life. It turns out Hanna is actually a specialist in moving images--and he is one of two principal cinematographers on the documentary series "Circus", a multi-part documentary series premiering November 3, 2010, 9:00pm-11:00pm on PBS.

A gallery of Hanna's intimate stills from the series is on PBS's website here. His photography gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what happens to the performers beyond the performances.

From the PBS website: "[T]he documentary follows the legendary Big Apple Circus on an unforgettable journey from the big top to the “back lot,” where nail-biting drama unfolds both high in the air and down on the ground and the real heart of the circus beats. CIRCUS goes behind the scenes to explore a distinctive world with its own rules and lingo and no fixed address."

Audrey Lodato and Jennifer König: "Left Behind" in Poughkeepsie

© Audrey Gallant

Photographer Audrey Lodato is featured in collaborative exhibition with Jennifer König at Cubbyhole Coffeehouse in Poughkeepsie, NY. The theme is "Left Behind", with attention focused on abandoned buildings and other ruins, capturing the beauty in decay.

The Facebook page for "Left Behind" includes a selection of images from the series.

Lodato's artist statement on her website gives some background on her interest in urban exploration, and features this lead paragraph, "In the absence of the living, there still exists a life. Every abandonment has a heartbeat, a pulse that makes it both unique and alive. Finding that rhythm is one of the purest things I‘ve experienced, but explaining why I’d want to can be something else entirely."

There is an opening reception October 23 at 8 pm. The Cubbyhole Coffeehouse is located at 44 Raymond Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY. The opening will feature music and poetry written based on the photographs.

Tracy Walter Ferry and Anita Gangi Balkun: Rootage at Artspace Hartford

Sculptors we met at City Wide Open Studios Tracy Walter Ferry and Anita Gangi Balkun are exhibiting at Artspace Gallery, 555 Asylum Ave., Hartford CT. Ferry's background as a nurse informs her sculpture, which sometimes incorporates medical supplies into objects that look visceral but intriguingly unfamiliar. Read Hank Hoffman's blurb about the exhibition on ctartscene.blogspot.com here.

There is an opening reception with music by the Balkun Brothers Thursday, Oct 7, 5-7 pm, and the show will run until Saturday, Oct. 16.

Paul Berger launches Over the Horizon Photography

© Paul Berger
Client Paul Berger just launched his new website Over the Horizon Photography. Berger shoots medium format color and black and white film, and his prints are both traditional and fine art digital. The website includes selections from his series on Nantucket Island, as well as images from national parks and monuments, and other locations.

Wooden boats by the harbor

His online bio highlights his philosophy of shooting and his reasons for sticking with film: "Film requires that I slow down a bit, put a little more thought into the individual compositions, and be more disciplined with what I am exposing."

Putting together a cohesive website takes a lot of work, so it deserves some mention that there's a nice balance between black and white and color.
