"The Melt" at the Mercurial Gallery opens Feb. 23, 2013

"The Melt" is a juried group exhibition at the Mercurial Gallery, 11 Library Place, Danbury, CT which will be on view from February 23 through March 22, 2013. There is an opening reception on Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 5 pm - 7 pm.

The call for submission stated the theme like this: "Icicles dripping. Glaciers fading. Cheese oozing on a hot sandwich. A hinted smile. A choked emotion, seeping out into paint, or steel, or ink."

Best in Show will be awarded by co-curators Amanda Bloom and Katie Bassett. The artist whose work is chosen will receive a solo exhibition at the Mercurial in the 2014 calendar year.

"The Human Touch: Five Printmakers" at Silvermine

"The Human Touch: Five Printmakers" is a group exhibition at Silvermine Galleries, 1037 Silvermine Rd., New Canaan, CT that draws its inspiration from the human form.

There is an opening reception February 24 from 2 - 4 pm, and there is an artists' talk March 5 at 6 pm.

Nancy Lasar of Washington, CT, and a client of Still River Editions, is one of the printmakers featured in the exhibition. The others are Karen Brussat Butler, Helen Cantrell, Alanna Fagan, and Nomi Silverman.

"News to History: Photojournalism and the Presidency" at the LBJ Library

The LBJ Presidential Library is host to the exhibit "News to History: Photojournalism and the Presidency - Selections from the Briscoe Center" from February 15, 2013 through October 1, 2013.

Among the photojournalists included in the Briscoe Center's collection are three Pulitzer Prize winners: Eddie Adams, David Hume Kennerly, and Lucian Perkins.

The photographs in this exhibit were printed by Mark Savoia of Still River Editions.

From the LBJ Presidential Library's website: "News to History showcases the Briscoe Center’s Presidential photographic resources, highlighting the thirteen Presidential administrations from the 1930s to the present. In addition, the exhibit features images of then-current events and personalities that defined each President’s tenure, capturing the interaction of each President with their times while spotlighting the Briscoe Center’s non-Presidential news photography."

Joy Bush, "Ruins of a Holy Land" at RSM Art Gallery, Madison, CT

Photographer Joy Bush's "Ruins of a Holy Land" is on exhibit at the Mary C. Daly, RSM Art Gallery, Mercy Center at Madison, 167 Neck Road, Madison, CT from February 8 through March 9, 2013. Bush is a professional media and fine art photographer who has published and exhibited widely.

"'Ruins of a Holy Land'" offers a glimpse into Holy Land USA, a shrine and tourist attraction in Waterbury, Connecticut that officially closed to the public in 1984. The 19 acre property includes miniature replicas of ancient Bethlehem and Jerusalem and once attracted over 200,000 persons each year. Joy Bush captures the piety, former glory, and disrepair as chronicled through her twenty years of pilgrimage to the site.


"James Grashow: The Cardboard Bernini" comes to Ridgefield Playhouse

On Friday, February 15, 2013 at 7 pm, there will be a screening of "The Cardboard Bernini", the documentary film by Olympia Stone about the creation and ultimate disposition of the artist James Grashow's multi-piece sculpture "Corrugated Fountain."Tickets are $15 (adults); $10 (seniors and students). The Ridgefield Playhouse is located at 80 E Ridge Rd., Ridgefield, CT.

There is a VIP post-screening party at the Aldrich Museum, 258 Main St., Ridgefield, CT.

Painter Faith Stewart Gordon of Bridgewater, CT is featured in a one-artist exhibition at Marty's in Washington Depot, CT.

Stewart-Gordon's colorful acrylic paintings of interiors, still life, and her travels have been featured in several solo and group shows including one in Italy. She studies painting with Banjie Nicholas.

"Aesthetic Expressions" at YMCA Escape to the Arts Gallery

Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut's Escape to the Arts Gallery in Danbury, Connecticut is featuring a three-artist show of work by Gary Stanford, Christa Forrest, and Randy Lagana from February 4 through March 15, 2013.

There will be an opening reception on Saturday, February 16 from 4 pm - 6 pm. ESCAPE to the Arts is located at 293 Main St. Danbury, CT.

"Gary Stanford of Danbury presents black & white photography depicting the urban landscape. Stanford's picturesque images of the Manhattan skyline and architecture have a classic quality. Stanford is a self-taught artist who honed his skills in photography while working at his college yearbook and newspaper, photographing rock stars, celebrities and student demonstrations in the late '60s.

Christa Forrest of Stamford explores unique compositions in nature's surroundings. She likes to showcase and emphasize natural colors as a way of capturing the mood and feeling of a place, rather than depicting a realistic scene. Forrest is a member of the Connecticut Pastel Society, Stamford Art Association and Greenwich Arts Council. Her work has been seen in various exhibits throughout Connecticut and New York.

Abstract paintings by Randy Lagana of Brookfield will compliment the representational work of Forrest and Stanford. Lagana's acrylic paintings are full of intense color and movement. He has illustrated books, magazines and games in the US, Germany, Holland, France, Italy Russia, and the Scandinavian countries. Lagana's work has been exhibited in many shows throughout the US, Canada and England."

"In the heART of Winter" Exhibit at the Danbury Museum

The Danbury Museum and Historical Society is hosting the first exhibit of 2013 for the Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut's "Accessible Art" program. The exhibit runs from January 26 through March 22, 2013.

Area artists submitted portfolios to CAWC, and were chosen by a jury to exhibit in businesses and cultural institutions throughout 2013. The artists chosen for this first show were Jane Bennett, Christa Forrest, Tiffany Johnson, Claudine Mussuto, Jerome Nevins, Daniela Kinsbourne, Randy Lagana, Joan McCaffrey, Honorah O'Neill , Peach Pair, and Dayna Wenzel.

There is an opening reception on Saturday, January 26 from 4 pm - 6 pm. The Danbury Museum is located at 43 Main St., Danbury, CT.

40th Anniversary Art Show: Bedford includes Lisa Cohen and Kaz Strankowski

The 40th Anniversary Art Show: Bedford takes place January 25 - 27 at St. Matthew's Church in Bedford, NY. Among the artists exhibiting are Still River Editions clients Lisa Cohen and Kaz Strankowski.

The exhibit is curated by Susan Grissom and Leslie Henshaw. The gala and sale benefit local Bedford charities.

The exhibition and sale will take place Saturday, January 26 10 am - 7 pm, and Sunday, January 27 noon - 4 pm. There is a preview champagne gala (ticketed admission) on Friday, January 25 from 6:30 pm - 9 pm.

"ORANGE: CT ASMP Members' Exhibition" at Still River Editions

The Gallery at Still River Editions announces "ORANGE: Connecticut Chapter, American Society of   Media Photographers Members' Exhibition". The show has been up since January 3, 2013, and will run until February 28, 2013.

 There is an opening reception on Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 4 - 6 pm. The reception is free and open to the public. 

 The photographers who are participating in the exhibition were given a one-word theme: "orange", and have responded in very creative ways.

Galeria Súbita opens on First Night; "Shadows" at the Mercurial

The Arts Network of Danbury is exhibiting work in a pop-up gallery exhibition called Galeria Súbita at 262 Main St., Danbury from December 29, 2012 through January 28, 2013. "Galeria Súbita" means "sudden gallery" in Portuguese.

There is an exhibition opening on First Night, December 31, 2012 from 4 pm - 8 pm featuring Afrikan drumming by A Common Ground Community Arts Center.

Normal hours for the exhibit: Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon - 4 pm until January 28.

Exhibiting artists include Catherine Vanaria, Mark Savoia, Lys Guillorn, Jing Lu, Jeff Buckholz, Kialynn Bird, Brian Walters III, Amanda Bloom, John O' Sullivan, Scott Jackson, Katie Bassett, Shona Curtis, David Haislip, Eric Camiel, Marko Susla, Jim Felice, Adrew Werner and other local artists.

Does hanging artwork hang you up?

We are not usually in the endorsing business, but came across an APP that can help anyone who hangs artwork on a wall and wants it to be an easy and quick process. I am talking about Hang-a-pic, for iPhone and iPad. Over the last few months Still River Editions has "suggested' a few operational features to the developer, and to our surprise, he listened. It has turned out to be one of our favorite APPs.

This is what it does (example); to hang four different width framed pieces on a wall, just enter the widths and wall dimension and it tells you where to put your hook or nail. No guessing, no fuzzy math, it just works. We now use it in the gallery all the time. And for $1.99, a real bargain, Hang-a-pic.

"White" at Kehler Liddell Gallery, New Haven

"White" is the holiday season group show at Kehler Liddell Gallery, which runs from November 15, 2012 until December 23, 2012.

From their website: "White is the color of possibilities from the mundane, like the stripe on the edge of the road, to the grand, like the white that gives relevance to black in a photograph.  As a subject of KLG artists, white hides, morphs, acts as a shape changer and refuses any type of predictability."

The Bridgeport Art Trail, November 8 - 11, 2012

The Bridgeport Art Trail is a multi-venue, multi-event, cultural festival in Bridgeport, CT from Nov. 8 - 11, 2012. Open studios, performances, gallery shows.

One of the main attractions on Thursday 11/8 at 6:30 pm is the ribbon cutting for the City Canvases mural at the Bridgeport train station by Liz Squillace with Darcy Fangi, Frank Foster, Ruben Marroquin and Jaclyn Podlaski. The Bridgeport train Station is located at 525 Water St. The unveiling is followed by a City Canvases closing party at the Arcade, 1001-12 Main St., from 8 pm - 10 pm including new media projections and other festivities.

Other venues include City Lights Gallery, The American Fabric Arts Building, the Nest Arts Factory, Read's Ground Floor Gallery, the Atrium Gallery, The Bijou Theatre, and many more.

Photographer Harrison Judd is exhibiting "End of an Era: Past Identity/Future Vision" presented by The Windham Textile and History Museum at ArtSpace, 480 Main St., Willimantic, CT. The exhibition runs from November 9 through December 3, 2012

An essay about this body of work appears on Judd's website, along with photographs, and an introduction by the late author and illustrator, Maurice Sendak. Judd photographed the demolition of the last American Thread Mills smokestack in Willimantic, CT.

Paul R. Berger Photography Exhibit: "Solitude"

Photographer Paul R. Berger is featured in a solo exhibition titled "Solitude" at Danbury City Hall 3rd floor gallery (outside the Mayor's office), 155 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury, CT from October 6 through December 6, 2012.

There is an opening reception on Thursday, November 15 from 4:30 - 6:00 pm.

Berger uses medium-format film cameras to create highly detailed photographs in both black-and-white and color. His subjects are both natural and human-made landscapes that convey the feeling of solitude.

Berger's exhibit is part of the "Accessible Art Project" by the former Housatonic Valley Cultural Alliance, now called the Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut.

Phyllis Crowley: "Fields and Screens" at Choate Rosemary Hall

"Fields and Screens" is an exhibit of photography by Phyllis Crowley at Paul Mellon Arts Center Gallery at Choate Rosemary Hall school. The show opened November 1 and ends December 15, 2012.
There is an opening reception on Friday, November 16, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

Crowley's landscape work in this series is reminiscent of Japanese screens.

From the press release: "[Crowley] notes, 'In working with the landscape, I am not attempting to simply represent what I see . . . . The less realistic the image, the more the work encourages participation from the viewer. With the use of abstraction, multiple images, and non-conventional formats, I can create new relationships which bring me closer to the original emotional experience.” Crowley’s photographs may also intentionally distort and transform information through screens of water, dirt, or fabric—a reference to what she calls “our inability to know anything clearly or directly.'”
