Surface Tension is an exhibition of recent underwater photographs by Still River Editions’ co-owner and WCSU Department of Art photography professor Catherine Vanaria.

Catherine Vanaria combines her love of swimming with her artistic practice. She has returned to underwater photography several times during her career—earlier works were hand-colored black and white prints, with an almost ethereal softness. This new body of work is in full color. At times, the texture of the water resembles brushstrokes, abstracting the figure slicing through the surface, and the result has vibrant presence.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Catherine Vanaria is a photographer, master darkroom technician, and educator. Her work is included in the Polaroid Collection, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame collection, as well as many private collections, and has been included in numerous group shows throughout the northeast United States including the Aldrich Museum (Ridgefield, CT). Her personal work has been published in XTC: Song Stories (Hyperion, 1998), Exposure: Special Edition, extended booklet accompanying Robert Fripp's re-release (Discipline, 2006), Smithsonian Rock and Roll: Live and Unseen (Smithsonian Books, 2017) and This is Pop, a documentary on the band XTC (2017).

Catherine is Professor of Photography at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT.  She graduated from Hartford Art School with a BFA in Photography, and Savanna College of Art and Design with a MA in Digital photography and from the Art Institute of Boston with MFA in Visual Arts (Photography).
