Tracy Walter Ferry / 21 Rooms in York, Maine

Sculptor and multi-media artist Tracy Walter Ferry, who we met during City Wide Open Studios last year, participated in 21 Rooms, an art event at the Nevada Motel in York, Maine on Friday, September 23.

©Tracy Walter Ferry - click to enlarge

From the 3S Artspace website: "21 featured artists will be afforded one of the motel’s 21 rooms for two nights to serve as a mini-residency or act as a studio. On the second evening, two stories of rooms will be opened to the public and presented as mini-galleries. The show will transform the Nevada Motel into an interactive spectacle of installation, performance and video art. Participating artists will be coming from as close as Wells, Maine, and as far away as Dallas, Texas. 21 Rooms was guest-curated by Quinn Corey, a long-time creative presence in the emerging arts scene in Providence, RI, along with 3S co-founder, John Gayle."

Ferry was a longtime registered nurse, who went on to earn her MFA from Hartford Art School. Her sculpture is visceral and engaging.

I have family in York and stayed at the Nevada about 10 years ago. It is a  mid-century-modern style motel with a turquoise and white color scheme. I love the retro poster, and the concept for the event is brilliant. Having 21 artists turn a motel into temporary studio and/or performance space is a great model for creative use/re-use outside of the underutilized-factory-turned-studio-building mode.

Hat City Millinery Spectacular Brassiere, 2011
© Lys Guillorn
Client, visionary artist, and breast cancer survivor Edith Borax Morrison has contributed several art bras as well as two of her drawings for the auction. Our own Lys Guillorn has contributed a bra that includes vintage millinery flowers that was inspired by Danbury's hatting history. Guillorn's bra is in honor of her grandmothers, one who is currently being treated for breast cancer, and the other, who was always crafting for a cause.

From the website: "ArtBra-New Haven is the expression of the community of survivors, supporters, and artists, in celebration of and thanks to the wonderful people who helped get us through the odyssey of breast cancer. Bruce Barber, host of NPR's “Yale Cancer Center Answers”, has graciously agreed to be our MC and Auctioneer. We will also be honoring our own Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro for her groundbreaking work on the “No Drive-Through Mastectomies” legislation, which has helped so many post-operative patients.

Eileen Kaplan, noted author of Laughter Is The Breast Medicine, will be one of our survivor models. Eileen will also be available at a book signing following the fashion show."

Organizers Gaye Hyre and Serena Hatch have collected around 40 art bra and fine art donations from area artists and inspired individuals. The auction will benefit a fund that offers financial assistance to women (and men) who would otherwise have difficulty paying for their breast cancer treatment.

The Omni Hotel New Haven is located at 155 Temple St., New Haven, CT.

Laurie Lambrecht: The First and the Unseen, and a new book

Laurie Lambrecht is exhibiting at Rick Wester Fine Art her photographs created while a studio assistant to Pop Art master Roy Lichtenstein. Many are featured in her upcoming monograph In Roy Lichtenstein's Studio, (Monacelli, 2011)

Among her most powerful images is "Roy in Yellow Interior, 1990", the photograph used for the cover of the book. In it, the viewer sees Lichtenstein painting, but there is a tromp l'oeil effect due to the scale of the domestic interior he is working on. The painter appears to be transported into another Pop world of his own creation.

See Lambrecht's website for a list of book signing events and a November lecture at the 92d St. Y in Manhattan.

Rick Wester Fine Art is located at 511 West 25th St., Suite 205, New York, New York.
