Invitation to Engage: 60 Years of Long Wharf Theatre & Beyond is an exhibition celebrating Long Wharf Theatre’s history as a New Haven institution, and a tradition of theatre-making that has ripples far beyond the walls of the original Long Wharf Theatre. The multi-gallery exhibition, which takes place at the New Haven Museum, opened on Wednesday, May 21st, 2025 with an opening reception, and continues through February, 2026.
At the opening, speakers included Artistic Director, Jacob G. Padrón, Kathleen Chalfant (who starred in the theatre’s 1997-1998 production of Wit), and Terrence Riggins, actor and playwright whose play Unbecoming Tragedy is currently being staged by Long Wharf Theatre from May 22 - June 1, 2025.
The exhibition consists of archival materials, posters, set and costume designs, costumes, props, and many photographs—among them numerous enlargements Still River Editions printed from both scans of original 8”x10” photographs, and digital production stills. Still River Editions worked closely with Long Wharf Theatre’s Chief of Staff Jessica Durdock-Moreno to cover in print the breadth and depth of the theatre’s productions. It was an incredible honor to work with the theatre’s legacy in photographs.
The power of the images lies in the talented photographers who captured them, and of course the actors who are their subjects—but also the many theatre professionals responsible for each aspect of a given production. The power of theatre is the synthesis of its many parts, and that is evident in the exhibition.
The New Haven Museum is located at 114 Whitney Avenue, New Haven. Please see their website for hours and admission.
