Botanical artist Kathie Miranda has won the first American Society of Botanical Artists' Anne Marie Carney award in recognition of outstanding work in a non-juried exhibition for her drawing Prayer Plant. Anne Marie Carney, who lived in Ontario, Canada, left her career as a cardiac nurse to become a botanical artist.  When she passed away last year, her family established the award to encourage others to follow their artistic passion.

Kathie Miranda, the former coordinator of the New York Botanical Garden's botanical art program, currently works full time researching and painting plant life. She says "It's a thrill to be recognized for this prestigious award - I'm the first in what will be a 36-year tradition! I hope it will inspire others to follow their dreams."
