Edith Borax-Morrison "Monotliths and Magic" at Kehler Liddell Gallery

A solo exhibit of Edith Borax-Morrison's work titled "Monoliths and Magic" will be on view at Kehler Liddell Gallery in New Haven from February 16 through March 19, 2017.

Running concurrently is a solo exhibit of paintings by Frank Bruckmann titled "Studio Still Lifes." There is an opening reception on Saturday, March 11 from 3 pm - 6 pm, with artist talks at 5 pm.

Morrison's bio on Kehler Liddell's website states, "Edith's work is her identity. It is consistent, compulsive, with meticulous attention to detail. Each abstract drawing that is rendered in pen and ink, contains a series of intricate interwoven lines or circles or marks creating a unique maze like image. She calls her artwork "Mind fibers" or "Penweave " drawings. They are influenced by surreal, mystical, and psychological elements from the past. She is fascinated with weaving, hair,  fairy tales, myths, and  primitive societies. Edith finds her work is all consuming and at any hour day or night she may find herself at the drawing board working steadily on the piece until she is satisfied it is finished and has merit.

Edith received a MA degree from C.W. Post College, Greenvale, New York. She also studied at Art Students League in NY and with Paul Margin art studio in Hempstead, NY."

Edith Borax-Morrison and Keith Johnson: 2 solo shows at Kehler Liddell Gallery, New Haven

Edith Borax -Morrison e Keith Johnson are featured in simultaneous solo exhibitions at Kehler Liddell Gallery in New Haven from April 19 - May 20, 2012.

Morrison's exhibit of abstract ink drawings is titled "Alternative Pathways." Her drawings range from geometric studies to sinuous organic forms which intertwine on paper.

Johnson's exhibit of photographs is "Recent Work." Johnson's use of the grid in his "Extended Landscapes" led to his current work. Some photographs are completely abstract, and others use familiar objects as elements that form patterns in the larger work. Water surfaces, the sky and airplanes are recurrent motifs.

Both exhibits open on Sunday, April 22, from 3:30 - 6:30 pm with live music by Notattoos from 5:00 - 6:30 pm. Morrison and Johnson will also be speaking about their work.

The group exhibition Stone Work: Artists' Encounters with Hard Places is on view at the the Institute Library, 847 Chapel St., New Haven, CT from February 11 through March 10, 2012. There is a greeting of the artists on Saturday, February 11, from noon until 2 p.m.

Photographer client Keith Johnson is featured in the exhibition. The artists are: Marion Belanger, Frank Bruckmann, Daniel Buttrey, Anne Doris-Eisner, Emilia Dubicki, Keith Johnson, Constance LaPalombara, Roy Money, Kerry O'Grady, Matthew Weber.

The exhibition was curated by Stephen Vincent Kobasa.

"At the Edge of Things: Twenty-Four Photographers" at West Cove Gallery

Mark Savoia of Editora Still River is included in "At the Edge of Things: Twenty-Four Photographers", a group photography show at West Cove Studio and Gallery, that runs from August 25 - September 17, 2011.

There will be an opening reception on Sunday, September 4, 2011 (this is new date, postponed last week due to Irene) from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. West Cove Studio and Gallery is located at 30 Elm St., West Haven, CT.

SCRAWL Collaborative Drawing Show Closing Party in New Haven March 25, 2011

Zachary Keeting, our friend with whom we shared a studio at City Wide Open Studios last year, sent out a notice about the closing party and "Big Reveal" for SCRAWL Friday, March 25, 2011 at Artspace New Haven.

Over the last month and a half, SCRAWL brought individual artists and teams of artists into Artspace New Haven to draw on its gallery walls in a huge game of exquisite corpse. Each drawing was connected to the next without the artists being able to see each other's content. Keeting was part of a team called "The Futurists" along with other artists associated with New Haven's Educational Center for the Arts. Friday will be the first time participants and viewers can see the work in its entirety.

Closing party and "reveal" is this Friday, March 25, 2011 from 6-8 pm at Artspace New Haven, 50 Orange St., New Haven, CT. The reception is free and open to the public. There is a VIP cocktail hour from 5-6, and admission to that portion of the evening's events is $10.

Gerald Saladyga and Joseph Saccio at Kehler Liddell "Site Unseen" opening Nov. 7

Painter Gerald Saladyga and sculptor Joseph Saccio are in a two-person show titled "Site Unseen" that will be exhibited from November 4-December 5, 2010 at Kehler Liddell Gallery, New Haven. There is an opening reception on Sunday, November 5 from 3-6 pm with an artist talk at 3 pm. 

Saladyga's work is intriguingly minimalist with strong use of graphic symbols. He consciously redefines landscape in his artist statement on his website.

Haverá uma recepção de abertura na sexta-feira à noite, das 17h às 20h, no Espaço de Artes Em New Haven, Mark e eu exibiremos uma obra cada, mas a maior parte da exposição acontecerá no fim de semana na Erector Square. Eu irei à inauguração.

Levaremos impressões tradicionais e digitais de nossos próprios trabalhos. Optei por trabalhar em um formato um pouco maior do que tenho feito ultimamente e pedi ao Mark para imprimir algumas fotos em jato de tinta com pigmento de carbono, no tamanho 50 x 90 cm, de duplas exposições em filme preto e branco. O Mark vai trazer impressões a carbono em preto e branco que foram exibidas recentemente na NESOP e que mostram seu senso de humor e seu olho para a ironia. Ele também pode estar trabalhando em um tríptico de quase 4 metros de comprimento. A Cathy vai trazer alguns de seus retratos íntimos feitos com a câmera de 20 x 25 cm que atualmente fica a cerca de 3,5 metros de mim, como uma dançarina solitária no meio do laboratório.

É gratuito, então, se você quiser fazer uma viagem de um dia a New Haven para ver obras de arte interessantes de todos os tipos e qualidades, venha nos visitar e dizer um oi. Estamos ansiosos para conhecer nossos colegas artistas e entrar na agitação.

Artist As Curator at Kehler Liddell in New Haven, Opening July 11

The artists for "Artist As Curator" were chosen by artists represented by Kehler Liddell Gallery in New Haven. Each artist represented by Kehler Liddell chose a regional guest artist to be in the show.

The guest artists are: Gulgun Aliriza, Melody Best, Janice Bielawa, Richard Carleton, Terry Dagradi, Jean Dalton, Catherine Doocy, Chris Durante, Alanna Fagan, Andrew Hogan, Lori Glavin, Richard Lytle, Fethi Meghelli, Jason Noushin, Douglas Nygren, Tom Reilly, Jeremy Keats Saladyga, Thomas Stavovy, Susan Cutler Tremaine, Kevin Van Aelst, Ting Ou-Yang and Jonathan Waters.

The opening reception is Sunday, July 11, from 3-6 pm, with an artist talk at 3 pm. Kehler Liddell is located at 873 Whalley Avenue, New Haven, CT. The gallery is located in the Westville section of town, and there is parking behind the building.

Tom Peterson - Passing By at City Gallery, New Haven

Tom Peterson is exhibiting his color urban documentary photographs in a show called "Passing By" at City Gallery in New Haven from. January 7 to January 31. Peterson's photographs use familiar locations around Connecticut as a springboard for explorations of color and shape. There will be an artist's reception January 9, 2-5 pm. City Gallery is located at 994 State St., New Haven.

City Gallery is an artist-run co-op that was founded in 2003.

Edith Morrison and Keith Johnson in "Size Matters" show at Kehler Liddell in New Haven, CT

Client Edith Morrison is exhibiting drawings among 22 artist-members in different media at Kehler Liddell Gallery from December 10, 2009 to January 10, 2010 in the show "Size Matters". Also exhibiting is social landscape photographer Keith Johnson, about whom we've written fairly recently during a flurry of gallery/blog activity.

An artists' reception is Sunday December 13, 3-6 pm. Kehler Liddell is located at 873 Whalley Ave. New Haven, CT.

"Size Matters" is a salon-style exhibition that features some relatively small works and full scale art in a wide array of prices, geared toward holiday art sales. A portion of proceeds will benefit Child Life Arts and Enrichment Program at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital.

If you haven't seen Edith's work--it's wild and remarkable. Have a look in person--the drawings should be seen at full scale to appreciate their detail and flow.

New Haven's City-Wide Open Studios, Oct. 3-4

A number of clients, friends, and colleagues are participating in New Haven's 12th annual City -Wide Open Studios, presented by artSPACE this weekend Oct. 3-4, 2009 in New Haven, CT and the surrounding areas.

Some familiar participants include (in no particular order): Keith Johnson, Phyllis Crowley, Joan Fitzsimmons, Joe Fucigna, Kehler Liddell Gallery, Tom Peterson, Sara Bouchard and Leslie Kuo, Valerie Richardson, Margaret Roleke, Andrew Hogan, Dorothy Powers. There are other artists whose names I recognize from reading local arts publications, and far more whose names I don't know whose work looks really interesting.

On Friday, Oct. 2, artSPACE will hold a kickoff party for CWOS and reception for Dispersion, the CWOS juried exhibition, from 6-8 pm at 50 Orange St., New Haven. Saturday Oct. 3 open studio hours are from 11 am to 6 pm, and on Sunday Oct. 4, from 11 am to 5 pm.

In addition, local community-sponsored radio station WPKN will be hosting a fundraising art sale event (including a cat by friend Sue Czark).

Phyllis Crowley at Gallery 195 in New Haven

Photographer Phyllis Crowley is showing with painter Janet Lage at Gallery 195, a project of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven and Alliance Bank from now until November 13. Crowley's multiple images often destabilize the viewer by suggesting motion; varying points of view reflect a shifting gaze as seen all at once. There is an artists' reception Tuesday, September 15, 5-7 pm. Gallery 195 is on the 4th Floor of 195 Church St., New Haven, CT (across from the New Haven Green.)

Tom Peterson in new members show at City Gallery, New Haven

Client Tom Peterson and printmaker Amy Arledge are featured in the new members' show called "Juxtapositions" at City Gallery in New Haven. There will be an artists' reception Saturday, July 11, 3-6 pm. City Gallery is located at 994 State St. New Haven, CT.Peterson, from Hamden, photographs the local urban landscape for its shapes and colors, not just its familiar sites. I will admit--there is some fun in trying to figure out where some of the photos were taken.

Edith Borax-Morrison at Kehler Liddell Gallery, New Haven

Client Edith Borax-Morrison, and Emilia Dubicki are featured in the two-artist show No Constraints at the Kehler Liddell Gallery, 873 Whalley Avenue, New Haven, CT. The exhibition runs from June 4-July 5. There is an artists' reception this Sunday, June 7, 3-6 pm, and an artists' talk Thursday, June 18, 7 pm. In addition, there is a poetry reading Sunday, June 28, 3 pm.

I liked this tidbit from the gallery's description of the show, "No Constraints defines an attitude, a self motivating creative directive and its results. [...] Unstressed discipline, intellectual curiosity, and a joyful compulsion to work are evident in this exhibition of abstract art."

Both artists work abstractly. Morrison's work is visionary and intricate; her drawings are "pen weavings" of "mind fibers". I encourage you to go see her work, and to meet her at the reception.
