Group exhibit at City Gallery includes Phyllis Crowley

Phyllis Crowley, who had a solo photography exhibition at The Gallery at Still River Editions in 2016, is among the artists featured in the group show "Kaleidoscope" at City Gallery in New Haven from January 5 through 29, 2017. The other artists in the exhibit are Judy Atlas, Meg Bloom, and Nancy Eisenfeld.

The opening reception in Saturday, January 7 from 2 pm-5 pm with a snow date Sunday, January 8, 2 pm-5 pm. There will be an artists talk on Sunday, January 29 from 2 pm - 5 pm.

City Gallery is located at 994 State St., New Haven, Connecticut. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 12 pm - 4 pm or by appointment.

Robert Kalman's "I Am Here: The Lesbian Portraits"

Robert Kalman's exhibit, "I Am Here: The Lesbian Portraits" is on view at Soho Photo Gallery from December 7 through December 31, 2016. There is an opening reception on Tuesday, December 6 from 6 pm - 8 pm.

Kalman's exhibit pairs large-format black and white film portraits along with each subject's response to Kalman's question, "What's life like for you right now?" The question is one he asked his sister after she came out as a lesbian in 1976 at the age of 23.

Carriage Barn Arts Center's 37th Annual Photography Show

A number of Still River Editions clients are included in the The Carriage Barn 37th Annual Photography Show in New Canaan, CT. There is an opening reception on Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 4-6 PM. The exhibit will be on view through January 19, 2017.

Three of Marko Susla's photographs were chosen for the exhibition. The theme of these photographs encompasses the somewhat surrealistic, dreamy imagery of Coney Island at night. After taking a number of exploratory trips to the area, Susla later captured the imagery and emotion as it presented itself.  He plans to continue the series in 2017. Susla's pigment prints were made by Mark Savoia, Master Printmaker at Still River Editions.

Clients Lisa Berger, June Eichbaum, Karen Neems, Florence Minnis, and Karla Bernstein are also among the photographers exhibiting.

Holiday Extravaganza at Trailer Box to benefit Ann's Place

Trailer Box Project will present the “Trailer Box Project Holiday Extravaganza,” an exhibition of artist-made ornaments displayed within an immersive installation. The exhibit opens on December 3rd, and will close with a holiday party on December 11th. One hundred percent of the proceeds of the Holiday Extravaganza will be donated to Ann’s Place in Danbury, Connecticut.

“Trailer Box Project selected Ann’s Place as their mission is dear to our hearts,” explains Dana Walker, Director of Trailer Box Project.
“Trailer Box Project believes that the assistance that Ann's Place offers to individuals and families dealing with cancer are an enormous service to the community, and we are honored to support them.”

Trailer Box Project, a project space and gallery in Danbury, Connecticut is dedicated to assisting groundbreaking artists in sharing their concepts with the public. Sculptor Jim Felice founded the project to foster an environment of generosity, both for the artists that exhibit there and for the surrounding community.

Ann’s Place, a compassionate non-profit serving Connecticut and Hudson Valley, provides people dealing with cancer and their families with counseling, support groups, wellness activities, and educational resources. There is absolutely no charge for the use of their facility and services.

Jay Misencik and Geralene Valentine at the Bridgeport Art Trail, Nov 11 - 13, 2016

Photographers and cultural historians Jay Misencik and Geralene Valentine are participating in the 8th Annual Bridgeport Art Trail at the newly renovated Harral Building, 1103 Main St., Bridgeport from November 11-13, 2016. They will have a pop-up gallery for a three-day run including two of their bodies of work.

From their press email: "Poli’s Palace & Majestic Theatres Memories Project brings to life the two magnificent dormant theatres on Main Street in Bridgeport, CT. Complementing architectural photos of the theatre interiors, people share memories of their time spent at the two theatres. The theatres, built by Sylvester Z. Poli, opened in 1922. They closed in the 1970s.

The Bridgeport Portrait Project is a photo/audio/video documentary style project that introduces you to the people who are Bridgeport. The project participants share their stories of values and beliefs . . . culture and heritage. They define Bridgeport, and tell why the City is so much more than just a PLACE."

Sixty by Hasna Muhammad at Arts Westchester

"Sixty" is an exhibition of photographs by Hasna Muhammad and curated by Jeanne Moutousammy-Ashe. The exhibit takes place at Arts Westchester from Sunday, November 13 through Monday, November 28, 2016. The opening reception is on Sunday, November 13 from 1 pm - 5 pm with music by Wali Ali.

"Through photography, text, and video, Hasna shares 60 photographs that capture everyday life and expose human and social conditions. Sixty contains excerpts from five collections:  The Extraordinary in the Ordinary—the beauty of our simple surroundings; Sara—the story of a woman living with ALS; Final Days—a glimpse of the rituals of saying goodbye; The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain (A Work in Progress ‘Cause It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over)—the story of a son’s fight for justice for his father; and My Life With Guitars—photographs of guitars. Curated by Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe.

In addition to being a photographer, Hasna Muhammad is also a writer and holds a doctorate in education.  Hasna writes non-fiction about family, social justice, and education.  She is the author of five collections of poetry, and she is the creator of Crumb Navigation®, a unique line of saygreetings about navigating the nuances of aging and living well. Hasna’s work has been published at Sankofa.org and Crisis magazine. She is currently working on Places to Stand, a collection of photographic essays about growing up in the home of her parents, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. Hasna is celebrating her 60th birthday with this exhibition."

Muhammad says of the exhibition, "I want others to see what I see and recognize it; connect to it and hopefully be reminded, affirmed, agitated, challenged, and moved by it."

Danger Gallery opening in Stamford, CT

Visual artist Holly Danger announces the opening of Danger Gallery, her Stamford-based experimental art space and studio, and its debut exhibition, the multimedia show "Friends+Lovers."

The show, which opens with an artists' reception on Saturday, October 22 from 7 pm - 9 pm, will feature work in a range of media by Toby Goodshank (a former member of the indie rock band Moldy Peaches), Adam Ace (landscape photographer), Mark Andreas (kinetic sculptor), Cris Dam (painter), Ruben Marroquin (fiber artist and weaver), Ben Quesnal (mixed-media artist), Liz Squillace (screen printer and mural artist), and Holly Danger (video artist). Indie folk duo The Moon will present a live musical and visual performance. The exhibit will run until December 22.

The Danger Gallery is located in the Glenbrook Industrial Park at 652 Glenbrook Road, Suite 3-206 in Stamford, CT.

Carriage Barn Arts Center's call for photography submissions

The Carriage Barn Arts Center is looking for submissions for their 37th Annual Photography Exhibition juried by noted photo editor and curator Laurie Kratchovil. Submissions are due by October 29th, 2016. The opening reception for the exhibit will be on Saturday, December 3, from 4 pm - 6 pm. The exhibit will be on view from December 3 - Jan 19, 2017.

An installation by artist Dayna Wenzel, and an art film by collaborators Janice Mauro and Joanne Pagano Weber will be celebrated with an opening reception at 5:00pm on Saturday, October 22nd and will run through November 19th at Trailer Box Project in Danbury, CT. In addition, there will be a festive fall brunch on Sunday, October 30, from 1 pm - 4 pm featuring music by Still River Editions' Lys Guillorn.

Edited from the press release: "In 'Hive and Seek,' Danbury artist Dana Wenzel invites the viewer to “enter the hive” and explore the “elusive community of superior builders who have survived for eons” that are now threatened by the actions of man. Within the Trailer Box Project space, Wenzel explores nature’s elegant and mysterious repetition of shapes and asks the viewer to consider their own personal connections to the environment. [...]

An art film by artists Janice Mauro and Joanne Pagano Weber will be the first film to be screened in the new on-site Trailer Box Gallery. In 'Beware of the Year 7000,' the two collaborators expand on their 2009’s dystopian film, The Tidal Decade. The filmmakers utilize humor and self-criticism to address the ramifications of ongoing climate change and corporate greed."

Tom Peterson: "Court House Eyes" at The Gallery at Still River Editions

The black-and-white photographs in Tom Peterson's exhibition "Court House Eyes" examine the film noir aesthetic. The exhibit runs through December 23, 2016 with an opening reception on Saturday, October 22, from 2 pm - 4 pm at The Gallery at Still River Editions.


 Tom Peterson is a documentary and fine art photographer from Hamden, Connecticut who began his photography career after early retirement from The Hartford Financial Group. He's currently a member of City Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. This is his first all black-and-white exhibit.

 Peterson says of this exhibit, "Most of the photographs included in 'Court House Eyes' were taken in New Haven and Hartford, Connecticut. The theme was influenced by the memory of watching the movie 'The Third Man'. My intent was to use the dramatic effect of strong, morning light and shadow to evoke the dark, dramatic mood of 1950s film noir."

New Haven's City Wide Open Studios begins on October 7 with a reception and exhibit at Artspace New Haven from 5 pm - 8 pm, 50 Orange St.

Westville Weekend, Sat-Sun, Oct 8-9, Westville neighborhood of New Haven. Violet Harlow, who has exhibited work at Still River Editions will be participating in a studio in West River Arts in Westville.

Armory Weekend, Sat-Sun, Oct 15-16, Goffe St Armory. Colin Burke (whose exhibit just closed at Still River Editions) will be in the Armory attic with a room-sized double camera obscura. Call for submissions at Hygienic Galleries: The f-stops Here

Hygienic Galleries are accepting photography submissions for jurying into the exhibition "The f-stops Here" Oct 6th - 8th at their location at 79 Bank Street, New London, CT. They request ready-to-hang work during gallery hours Thursday & Friday: 2pm - 7pm, Saturday: 11am - 7pm. More info on their Facebook event page.

All photographers from the region are invited to submit up to three works in color or black & white for consideration in this year’s juried photography exhibition. Offered only once per year, this will be the fifth iteration of The f-Stops Here and will be juried by Mattias Lundblad and Pola Esther.

Cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place photographers. A small entry fee is required upon submission. Artists are welcome to submit pieces October 6 – 8th in person at Hygienic. The show runs Saturday, October 15 through November 12.


Richard Klein's solo exhibition "The Same Glass, Twice" at WCSU

Richard Klein's solo exhibition "The Same Glass, Twice" is at the Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center at WCSU opens on Thursday, October 6 with a reception from 6 pm - 8 pm.

"The Same Glass, Twice" is an art exhibition featuring a selection of recent sculptural works inspired by the artist's visionary use of found objects. From eyeglass frames and lenses to ashtrays, drinking glasses, and photographs — these human-made objects are re-contextualized and transformed into complex sculptural constructions which reveal and amplify their existing meaning.

Richard Klein is a curator, artist, and writer who has been exhibitions director of The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum since 1999.

The exhibit is on view from October 6 through December 11, 2016. The Visual and Performing Arts Center at WCSU is located at 43 Lake Avenue Extension, Danbury, CT. Take the stairs to the 2nd floor. Regular gallery  hours are Tues -Thurs  12 - 4 pm, Sat. - Sun. 1 - 4 pm.

"Figuratively" by Karen Bonnano at Art & Frame

Paintings by Karen Bonanno are featured in an exhibit called "Figuratively" at Art & Frame of Danbury from September 25 through November 5, 2016. Also on view are selected works of glass artist Heidrun Morgan. There is an opening reception on Saturday, October 1 from 5 pm - 7 pm, with music by Wendy Cahill and Daniel Patrick Higgins.

Karen says of her work in her artist's statement, "I am most interested in the figure, whether it be in an interior, exterior or an undefined atmospheric space. Through expressive mark making and color choice, the figure is formed and solidified in its environment. Not so much capturing a likeness of a particular person but rather a gesture and mood that contributes to the narrative of the painting. My main influences are the artists of the Bay Area Figurative movement including David Park, Richard Deibenkorn and Elmer Bischoff as well as Cezanne, Bonnard and Matisse."

"The Restless Planet: The Earth's Many Moods" Peter Howe at Five Points Gallery

Photographer Peter Howe's exhibit "The Restless Planet: Earth's Many Moods" curated by Power Both will be at Five Points Gallery in Torrington, CT from September 29 through November 5, 2016. There is an opening reception on Friday, September 30 from 6 pm - 8:30 pm. The exhibit will be in the West Gallery.

Howe is a former picture editor of Life Magazine. He is the author of two books on photography, Shooting Under Fire, and Paparazzi, and several children's books.

From Five Points Gallery's website: "During my career in photography people were usually the subjects of both the pictures I shot as a photographer and published as an editor. Several years ago I had a traumatic brain injury and found I was no longer able to function as an author, something I had been doing for about a decade. This brought me back to taking photographs, and I became fascinated by the idea of unpopulated landscapes. Instead of photographing the inhabitants of earth I concentrated on the planet itself. This is the land as it may have been before we crawled out of the sea, and as it may be when the last humans leaves."

In addition to Howe's exhibit there will be two solo shows of paintings--in the East Gallery, Geoffrey Detrani's "Way Station," and in the Top Gallery, Walter Kendra's "The Florence Series."

There will be an artist conversation with all three on on Friday, October 21 at 6 pm.

"James Grashow: The Prince of Prints" at The Center for Contemporary Printmaking

"James Grashow: The Prince of Prints" will be on display at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking from September 10 through December 10, 2016 with an opening reception on Saturday, September 17, from 3 pm to 5 pm. The exhibition showcases the woodcuts of Grashow, a long-time resident of Redding, Connecticut.

From the press release:
Grashow received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees at Pratt Institute, in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York and received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Florence after graduation. Grashow has created album covers for rock artists including Jethro Tull, The Yardbirds, Ramsey Lewis and Deep Purple. His work has been exhibited at The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, The DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Peabody-Essex Museum among others. Grashow said, “I'm thrilled to have a retrospective print show at CCP. I've been doing woodcuts since the early sixties. It's incredible to be able to review your history through your work. Thinking about each piece and how it's a breadcrumb on the trail of your life. Having the show so close to home makes the experience even richer. I moved from NYC to Redding over forty years ago and can see how this area has woven itself into my work. Working on wood and living among the trees and gardens has been a perfect fit. Redding has not only been my home it's been my teacher. I look forward to sharing my work with my friends and community.”

Prior to the Opening Reception for James Grashow: The Prince of Prints, and in conjunction with Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play, CCP has partnered with the Stepping Stone Museum for Kids and the Maritime Aquarium of Norwalk to create a Fish Parade, on September 17 from 1pm to 3 pm. The Fish Parade will feature vibrantly painted, large-scale cardboard fish created by Grashow and decorated by area children.

Weather permitting, the parade starts at CCP and wends its way through Mathews Park, as the colorful school of fish make their way to their final destination at the Maritime Aquarium. All activities surrounding Worldwide Day of Play and the Fish Parade are free.

"Meeting Past" 2016 at the Akin Free Library in Pawling, NY

Catherine Vanaria, Mark Savoia, and Lys Guillorn of Still River Editions/Connecticut Photographics are among the over 90 artists participating in the annual exhibition "Meeting Past" at the Akin Free Library in Pawling, NY curated by artist and photographer Bibiana Huang Matheis. The exhibit runs from Sunday, September 11 through Sunday, October 23, 2016. The opening reception is on Sunday, September 11 from 1 pm - 5 pm with refreshments and a musical performance by "Jazzmen."
The artists participating in Meeting Past were asked to respond to the exhibits in the Akin Library in the medium of their choice. Vanaria's piece includes tintypes of dollar store items packaged in a wooden box, and is located on the first floor of the Akin Library. Guillorn's photograph and assemblage are in the basement, which houses the Gunnison Museum of Natural History. Savoia's photographs are on the upper floor which houses the Pawling Historical Society's collections.

Also among the artists exhibiting are David Haislip, and Dayna Wenzel who were in the "LOCALworks" exhibition at the Gallery at Still River Editions early in 2016. Haislip and Wenzel's works are also in the Gunnison Museum in the basement.

The Akin Free Library is located at 378 Old Quaker Hill Rd., Pawling, NY. A small donation to the museum is suggested as an entrance fee.  The library will be open on Saturdays and Sunday from 1 pm - 4 pm during the exhibition.
